Video: Lumiére Shots Then and Now

In the last years of the 19th century, the Lumiére brothers produced the first motion picture. Today, you can watch it on YouTube.

Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory, like the hundreds of Lumiére films that followed it, consists of a single, silent, unmoving black and white shot. While incredibly simplistic by modern standards, Lumiére films are celebrated today as the birth of an art form, and also for the powerful impressions created by their very simplicity.
